Is it possible to determine what kind of shotgun a Gebr Merkel SUHL serial number 170 178 is without having any other access to the gun?

Merkel USA has a spreadsheet with all Merkel serial numbers. You'll have to bug them like crazy to get them to give you the information, but they do have it.

I sent an email to Merkel Suhl directly and they answered me with model number and year of production in a week or so. That was for a prewar DR.
