Can anyone give me a time frame for the following proof marks? I'm away from my reference books right now. I'm thinking around 1894, but I may be wrong (again). Thanks OWD

I don't see "not for ball", which makes it post-1887. Looks to me like BP proofs only 1887-96. I think it would have had the "maximum" mark, plus powder and shot, were it nitro proof from that period. Eager to read other opinions.

The stamping of Nitro Proof started in 1896. From 1896-1904 the word Maximum was also stamped following. Post 1904 the word maximum was removed.

This gun would have been proofed 1887 or later due to two reasons, the word "Choke" rather than "Not For Ball" & also the 12/C chamber mark. I do not believe it can be said with absolute certainty this gun was not proofed between 1896 & 1904 as the Nitro Proof was still an option during that period. While it may well be true that most guns submitted for proof during those years received it, it is also true that "Not All" did.

Birmingham black powder proof 1887 - 1904. Impossible to rule out 1896 - 1904, as the gun is not nitro proof.

Birmingham black powder proof post 1887. Nitro proof was still only optional up until 1925 so it could go up as late as that. There is no Viewer's letter code so it will be before 1921. If you have a Maker and address that may help narrow the date down. Lagopus..... p.s. is it an Ejector?

Birmingham marks were changed following 1904, so no later than that. Crown/BP & Crown/V replaced the two marks with the crossed scepters for final black powder proof & inspection (view) at that point. Otherwise you would be correct.
