I am looking at an almost new 12 Bore David McKay Brown, SxS, double trigger, nice wood in 95% shape, about 6 years old. The Blue book says that these guns loose almost 50% of their value since new. Is that correct? How do they do at the auctions? Thanks

The bluebook is written for the dealers to wag in the faces of sellers hoping to get them to believe the price the buyer offers is a fair one. Dealers make their profit when they buy not when they sell. That is who the blue book serves.

It might be tough to find a seller willing ti take a 50% haircut--but guns like this take a big hit on the secondary market. As a made to order gun, you have to deal with the dimensions of the original owner and hope you can get a good fit. Much of the value--or original cost factor-- of guns like these come from the one of a kind-built just for me status that they give the original owner. I'd say 50% was right on! High end guns are tough to sell these days and a gun from a very small maker--McKay Brown for instance---has few buyers waiting in line on resale guns, esp. in 12 bore!

A friend's policy on used target shotguns is -33% from list and then an additional -25% then mark it up 25% So sellers of a K-80, Kolar or Pizza gun can expect a dealer to offer him about 5000 on a 10,000 gun. The dealer then sells it for7500. This old guy has sold more K-80's than a lot of the major dealers and has used this policy for the 20 years I have known him.

Contrary to what the US market may look like, there is evidence that premium guns continue to sell at very high prices. Not generally through auction. I was quite surprised during a swing through some east coast shops recently. Maybe a Purdey is more attractive than the stock market still.
