to turn a small beavertail forend into a splinter and still have it look correct, not to mention the checkering looking correct as well.

I hate BTF with an unholy passion.

A lot will depend on the configuration of the beavertail latch mechanism, and how far below the centerline of the barrels it is located. If it is well below, I would imagine it will be difficult to turn into a splinter

It depends on the gun and how closely the forend wood fits under the barrels. If considerable space exists between the wood and the underside of the barrels the gap will appear when the beavertail is reshaped to a splinter. Splinters usually touch the barrels approximately where beavertails are shaped concave to wrap loosely around the barrels.
