While trying to educate myself on vintage sporting rifles I ran across this picture. It looks like an interesting gun, the original poster says it was done up by Rigby. Can anyone tell me what action this is? Is that a bolt peep or a safety? Hard to tell by the picture. Thanks, JB

Appears to be a sporter based on a Steyr Mannlicher and is most likely a .256 (6.5 x 53R). These were quite popular with English sportsmen in the period between 1893/94 through to WWI. The rifle is based on the Steyr military action used by the Dutch and possibly some other countries. Can't tell from the photo if it has a bolt peep sight but it should have a wing type safety.

JB I've owned a few of the Steyr model 1892s. Very smooth rifle when redone by the Brits. All of mine have been in 6.5 x 53R.

If in good condition, an excellent rifle to shoot, too. Light recoil even in a very light rifle (if it fits you); easy to see why they were popular. And the general styling of the Brit '95s is often more to US tastes than some of the more Germanic treatments of the '03MS (like no pop-up cheekpieces, etc.).

Only problem is getting ammo--Norma is pricey and spotty supply; you can make from .303 but there is some work involved.

Don't shoot up the Kynoch ammo & save the boxes. It's pricey & collectable. I see you have clips; that's good, because without them you have a single shot. You should spring for case-forming dies. Forming .256 from 303 Brit is not difficult.

Sorry for the confusion, I do not own the rifle. I was browsing the web looking at vintage sporting rifles and came across this one. I just wanted to learn more about it as I have never seen that action before. How does the magazine work with the clip?

Mr. Harrell, Do you have more pictures of the Grant?

Thanks, JB

You need a clip to make it other than a single shot.

You put 5 cartridges into the clip. Open the bolt and insert clip & cartridges into the magazine. It's where John Garand got the idea for the M-1's en bloc clip magazine. Works slick, but without the clip, you have a single shot.
