Have a friend with a 12 gauge NID with this problem.
While the double appears in excellent condition, for some reason its hook had been braised to a depth of 3/16" and re-contoured, resulting in the barrel being apparently on-face - - least wise, I can't feel any play between barrel and receiver with the forearm off and the parts twisted by hand.

I recall that Elmer Keith once reported this problem with an NID 10 Super he had purchased from Capt. Crossman which the Captain had returned once to Ithaca and Keith had to return again before it came back right. Work here centered on the rotary. My friend's top lever snaps firmly in place and I can't detect any rotary bolt-barrel extension problem. Open to all thoughts and suggestions here. Who are some good smiths for this type of problem?

Any ideas as to what might be going on here?

How does braise stand up on the hook? Couldn't it be removed and the hook TIG welded and then re-contoured? Advantages here?

I have a late model Flues that does the same thing whenever you shoot the left barrel. You can shoot the right barrel with no problem. Does your friends gun do it with both barrels?

I remember reading somewhere that it was the early model NID's that had this problem and that it was soon fixed by Ithaca.

Perhaps this is one of those early NID's?

I had a 12-gauge Grade 1E in the 443,xxx range that had that problem, but it flowed down the stream of commerce before I ever dealt with it. None of my other NIDs have shown this problem from 1926 to 1941.

This is not unheard of. I THINK it has to do with the angle between the mating surfaces, but I dont know exactly. A decent smith ought to be able to fix it readily.

Merrington or Kearcher should be able to set it right.

Never heard of a hook with radius braized. Sounds like a butcher job to me; but if gun looks good otherwise, must have been a redo. Interesting thread. Please continue, gents. Chopperlump

This is pretty common. I had 2 fox shotguns with the same problem. Gregg is right, it has to do with the angle between the rotary hook and the rib extension. A good doublesmith should be able to fix your problem in pretty straight order. I personally would remove the brass and weld and re-fit.

As a side note, unless Elmer Keith had more than one NID Mag 10 this gun is still in regular use by one of the members here (or SSM) and in a recent conversation with him he mentioned a good day waterfowling with EK's old gun.

Oscar used to recomend a guy in TX that tig welded the rib extension and recontured it. The bolt in the gun is hard and seldom wears, sorry old guy's memory can't bring back the guy's name.
