Can anyone help me out with a couple of Browning questions? First, what years did Browning have problems with salt wood on their Superposed guns.? And where on a Diana grade is the engraving signed? Thank you, Paul

The salt curing process began in 1966 and continued until around 1971. There are salt wood guns for a few years after they quit using the process. Aside from the serial number giving you the date of mfg. it is pretty easy to tell if a gun is affected. Just look at the metal right next to the wood and if it is in any way pitted or corroded then you have a salt gun.

Hammerback, I've found that the best way to determine if the gun has saltwood is to remove a butt plate screw. Be careful the screws can become so rusted that they won't turn, or may break off. Dave

Dave I would add that you need to check the forend screws, too. It's possible to have a gun with either the forend or the stock be saltwood, and the other not; best to check them both.

Hammerback: Art Isaacson (Art's Gun Shop) told me just last week at Louisville that salt wood superposed guns have S7, S8 or S9 in their serial numbers. He said any other number(s) and you won't have the problem. Hope this info helps you. Mike

Reno Greco signed his in the duck pond right side. If it was Funken or Vranken, or Madam Whatshername, you'd have some incentive to look.

Here is a link to a very complete article on Browning Salt Wood' http://www.artsgunshop.com/Salt/Salt_Article-Page-1.htmHaving been through the problem once,I would never consider a Superposed with even the slightest chance of salt,

Just keep your guns BEFORE 1966 and you should be OK. The Art's gunshop site is the best one to go to. Good luck.
