I don't know the breakdown, but most of them were black chromed. As Terry pointed out, later in their production, the Japanese equivalent of the EPA apparently forced SKB to drop that process. However, I thought all of them had chrome-lined bores. I know that gunsmiths without the proper equipment don't like working on SKB chokes.

Black chromed barrels can be stripped down to the bare steel easily by a plating shop. This company does all the various exotic finishes and specializes in firearms finishing:

I always wondered what a set of those barrels would look like without the flat black paint?

Once the chrome is stripped, anyone know if these barrels are safe for hot-blueing? I don't know that that's what he'd want, but he might like to know what his options are.

I don't recall reading anything about SKB's method of barrel-joining during the Ithaca importation period. However, I have a 1961 Stoeger catalog in which they advertise SKB Royals. (Anyone ever see a Stoeger-imported SKB? I never have!) They refer to low temperature solder, so hot blue might not be a good idea.

I'm not sure of the age of my Ithaca/SKB 100 20 ga., but I bought it used around '93. The barrels were blued, with enough color gone that I rust blued them a few years later. I believe I used Pilkington's solution, and they came out fine. Still have the original bottle, but I'm out of the states at the moment, and can't check the label.
