Was over at the folks house for Christmas Eve and as usual the talk turned to bird hunting and dogs. My mother said she wanted to show us a little something from the past and came out with this hat. Her pal made it for her back in the '60's with birds my father had killed. I remember dogging for him back then and his reminding me to be careful with the birds when I carried them.

There must have been kits you could buy to make these hats or something. I've got a very similar one that belonged to my Aunt Lucille and I know my Aunt Virgina had one as well. Both were made from feathers that their husbands had brought back from a pheasant hunt in South Dakota during the late 40's or early 50's. Neat to see another one, I know Aunt Lucille actually wore her's on special occasions.

P.S. I asked Dad about it and he said they made that hunt in 1956 so I was wrong on the dates.

That is some hat, and probably worth a fortune as a sporting collectible. That's a kit???

I definitely wasn't belittling it saying it might be made from a kit. There must have at least been instructions somewhere or something, my Aunt Lucille's is just too similar to to a coincidence. They're both gorgeous and a great family related sporting artifact.

I don't believe it was a kit. My mom's pal made several of them and none of them were similar to each other. It kept her busy during the winter months when she could not get out and garden. Maybe there were forms for the hats that were available to start with.

Would have taken a lot of patient and painstaking work to make one of those.Ebay has similar hats from time to time for sale as well as other items made from pheasant feathers.Maybe this will start a new fad. Destry could probably supply a lot of waterfowl feathers for those who want a duck hat.

That's a great piece of memorobilia and craftsladyship. Could it have been made on a commonly available hat, like a straw or felt?
