Our annual 3 day coyote hunt wound up Sunday afternoon. 413 Coyotes were killed, with 1162 sightings reported. 143 teams competed with the winning team tallying 18. Several teams used a combo of 1 rifle, 1 shotgun, 1 a DOUBLE! Weather was better than last year, when minus temps and snow prevailed. Even with that harvest level, I saw a pack of 3 today while chasing roosters.

LD, That is quite a hunt. Those numbers are staggering. Put the math to what damage those 413 coyotes have done to the game populations over the last couple years. And what about those 700 still on the loose. I can't imagine how tough it is to raise a pheasant brood out there. I bet in the spring the coyotes are just frantic searching for the young chicks, gobbling them up as fast as they can. I've seen a few coyotes here in nothern Michigan run around hunting at a dead run. I think they have developed a flushing style for hunting grouse, woodcock and turkeys. Coyotes that have come into the turkey call are in high gear when they hit the decoys. Must be an advantage to take a bird out of the air. Mentioned this before, but I was 10 yds away in my front yard and watched a coyote take one of our chickens. Chicken ran, took flight and coyote knocked it right out of the air. Snatched it when it hit the ground and took off for the swamp. The garden hose in my hand was a poor choice of weapon. Coyotes, hawks, coons, possums, snunks are bad news for the upland game. Just bought a 243win for my daughter, and a 6mm Rem for myself to get serious about these coyotes. Always need an excuse for a different gun. Great buys on GB. Last Dollar, keep us posted on your coyote take for the winter and how they damage your pheasant population. Randy

I sorta doubt they have a lot of effect on the Pheasant population, some I am sure. Biggest problem, if you call it that, is the killing of calves and lambs. Some folks are starting to calve out about now, and they can take a lot of stock, in a hurry. We noticed that most of the Coyotes taken this year had mange, not good. Teams were from a bunch of States, Washington, Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri....Its a National type event, covered by several predator magazines, and partially sponsored by Sportsmans warehouse...

Maybe they'll invite Jummie Zumbo- fix him up with a EBR with a sniper grade scope-- Love to kill coyotes- all over our farm areas, 10 years ago, marginal--My favorite 'yote duster- M54 SG .220 Swift 26" ss barrel (I modified it to early M70 bolt and safety and it has a Timney trigger) a real "Dinger" - a 50 grain Hornady Moly-Tip will zap them 'yotes like nonthing else- dis-interests them- from eating pheasants, ducks, your pet Chiahuahua puppy off the patio- you name it-- Shoot to kill every one you can-- RWTF

I generally dont bother them, unless my wife gets on me about them killing our cats....Then, I have to turn off the neon sign that says, "free cats, coyotes welcome"....I bet the cats are worse on birds than the coyotes are..Off to chase roosters, season is winding down..
