At the urging of my eldest son, I relented and traveled to town to the weekend gun show. I had no intention of purchasing anything (do we ever?). Long story short, I walked past a table full of very well kept S x S guns and locked on the Simson pictured below. It is a very nice firearm. The owner said he had brought it from Germany (he was an importer) after he bought a collection from a neighbor. The mfg certificate was rolled up and inserted into one barrel. The seller said it had probable been in there for years. It has 28" bbls, 2.75" chambers, ejectors, choked M/F and weighs 6.6 lbs. Very few marks in the wood and zero marks on metal. The screws appear untouched. Proofed 31 August 1976. Locks up like a vault. $1500. What do you think?

Merkel clone thru and thru and built at the the same factory in Suhl. Choked full/mod which is standard for those guns. Without ejectors it would be a Merkel model 8, with ejectors you've got a Merkel model 47E. Should be marked on the barrel flats when its made and based on your paperwork those markings would be 876. Should also be marked on the barrel "made in GDR" I'm guessing as thats before reunification. That's the way we all want them. Saw lots of them when I was stationed in germany. Great pics btw.

35-70E should have ejectors; otherwise, it's not an "E". I actually like the swivels, although I'd rather not have the cheekpiece. But heck of a buy for what's essentially a Merkel 47E clone. You'll always take a small hit if you try to sell or trade because it says Simson and not Merkel, but it's every bit as good a gun.

It is not clearly visible but if you look in the high-lighted part of the certificate you can just make out 35-70E. I should have shot that more clearly.

A nice plain field gun for a decent price. And the paperwork is pretty darn interesting, too.

I wonder if Knopf is the son of Richard Knopf, maker of upper rung hunting examples or son of master stocker Wilhelm Knopf, both began just prior to WWII. I guess the controller could have been Richard or Wilhelm.

Any chance of a pic of the proofmarks?

Kind Regards,
