This gun is in a local shop here in Colorado.

http://www.mwreynolds.com/HTML/shotLCSmithMonogramSet.html

I don't know much about smith's but .............. WOW

I would like to see it in person, but I won't be able to get up to Denver for a few weeks.

At this time he has 4 or 5 smiths for sale.

Not plugging the store, just wanted to pass on some info for the Smith fans

That is a very nice Monogram, especially with the second set of barrels. He doesn't give the serial number and gives a date of 1903. There are records of guns having the HOT before 1904, but most of them will not have the serial number of the gun on them. Also without a letter it is hard to say if the second set of barrels came with the gun from the factory.

Unusual to see the gold inlaid "lighting" at the breech, they usually had scroll there and at the muzzle. The A3 and Deluxe models had that, but you could have whatever you wanted, within reason.

In my opinion a great aid in selling this gun would be a letter or not.

Letter or not, whether gun came with second set of barrels from the factory, it is still a great piece of American workmanship. There were only 131 made from 1893-1918, and 140 between 1918 and 1945, 2 were made in a .410

The seller stated that "The gun was sent back to Hunter Arms at a later date and they added the 26" barrels with the same serial number and Hunter Arms in the rib and it has it's own fore-end"; so it is highly unlikely that the old shipping ledger was modified to reflect the barrel addition. As to the gun itself, I prefer the early Mongram engraving, like this example, to the later styles; these early guns featured a game scene (usually dogs) in an oval along with some very nice line and border work. I have also found Monogram guns with this early engraving pattern to be much more difficult to find. As to the gold lightening bolt, that is a nice touch and not too unusual on an early Monogram; apparently Hunter would place this feature on any high grade gun for a few extra bucks, as I have seen the gold bolts treatment on two Grade 5's.
