A question for you 21 guys. How often do you see a Winchester 21 20 gauge that weighs under six pounds? This gun is a 20 gauge Skeet with 26 inch barrels,WS1 and WS2, 13.5 LOP to a checked butt.

Some of us would be very interested in that gun and how it came to weigh so little. Does the stock sound hollow? What is the actual weight? My lightest 21 20 gauge is an unusual 6 pounds 4 ounces, is a splinter forend canoe paddle stocked 28" gun with about a 13 3/4 inch stock with 1922 pad. If I get a chance to buy it back from the friend I sold it to several years ago, I will drill the stock hollow to see how light I can make it. I am not sure whether the 1922 pad or 7/8" of Juglans Nigra weighs the most,(or least).

That 6lb 4oz weight is equal to my Merkel 12 br with 28" tubes, not bad, but what is that .x oz business?

Eightbore and Charlie,

Thanks for the response. I have only owned two 21's because I like light guns. I owned this gun a few years ago and sold it to buy something else with the promise of right of first refusal (because I knew that it was unusually light for a 21). The new owner was about to sell it, so I had to buy or lose it.

I don't think the stock is hollow, but I am going to have a friend who is an expert check it. I should hear tomorrow from Cody about the original configuration of the stock. The stock appears to be original but only has a length of pull of 13 1/2 inches to a checked butt. The gun has been redone correctly and looks very good. It has a small wrist which I like because of my small hands. The actual weight is 5 pounds and 14 ounces. With a slip on leather pad to get to 14 inches LOP the total weight is 6 pounds and 1 ounce.

My primary gun is a 28 gauge, but with the weight of this gun and the WS1 and WS2 chokes I am going to hunt with it at least a couple of times. The downside is that I had to pay top end retail to rebuy it.

The serial number is in the 11000 range and has the correct beaver tail with ejectors and selective single trigger.

Thanks for input and I will followup with additional information when I hear from Cody and have my friend check it.

Take Care,
Riprap

The Cody records say that the gun was shipped in 1939 with 26 inch barrels, WS1 and WS2, with pistol grip stock with 13 1/2 inch length of pull. So the gun conforms to original specifications. Also, I failed to say earlier that it is a Skeet gun.

My expert friend agrees with me that the stock has not been hollowed and is the original. He says that the typical 20 gauge 21 of that period would weigh at least 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound more. He doesn't know what makes the gun so light. I was hunting with him on Saturday and the 20 gauge Grand American with the 26 inch set of barrels that he was hunting with weighed 6 3/4 pounds. When he thinks of a light 20 gauge 21 is is thinking of a gun that weighs about 6 pounds and four ounces.

I checked my records and the other 20 gauge 21 that I owned weighed 6 pounds and 10 ounces.

Any more information or knowledge of light weighted 21's is appreciated.

Thanks,
Riprap

An ounce is not much weight unless you are buying cocaine or gold...so here's my first question - is your scale accurate?

I think there is a lot of scale problems out there. People with 12 ga. 28 " barrels that weigh 5 1/2 lbs. I thought my Beretta 626e 20 ga. 26" barrels, straight stock was light 6 lbs. 4 oz, Winchester 20 ga. 101 26" barrels, same weight. Remington 1100, 26" barrel, vent rib, 8 1/2 lbs. I don't know where they find these 5 lb.+ guns.

Not sure how "tough" it is, but 21s do not have through bolts. Nevertheless, if you look carefully you'll notice the outline of the plug that will be found on every M21 checkered butt. 21 buttstocks are indeed hollowed out to varying degrees.

I don't know if the plastic stock sidelock versions I've recently read about are done up this way.
