I was thinking (dangerous) the other day and was wondering if anyone had worked up some Nitro for black loads for modern day muzzle loaders, I have a .45 thompson and a 058 Dixie made in Japan. These are modern steel guns and as I have worked up a good load for my Stephen Grant 500 express, I got to thinking it might be possible to do this with a muzzle loader. I was thinking patched round ball to start with and look at the case size of say a 450 express, figure out a powder charge add say 2 inches of dacron filler and make up a ramrod with a flat brass stop that would allow you to set the projectile at the right length. Any thoughts would be appreciated, Percu8ssion of course

Here you go - a smokeless muzzleloader! Happens everytime and the owner is now short a few fingers. He was lucky, the breeck plug could have been the weak point in which case he would have room for a third eye in the middle of his forehead!

Well one thing is for sure he started, or ended up with, a load that was too hot for that gun. Kind of looks like a few K80's I have seen. Most were destroyed by "reloaders" also. may want to stick with the original for a while longer. I agree that a nitro for black might be possible but the learning curve looks very bad, dangerous, from here.

The reason I asked this question goes back to when I was playing around with Black powder pistol and a couple of guys at the club were loading Ruger Stainless Old Army with nitro, as remember it they were using a known load for a .45 long colt and just squashing the ball in the chamber so as it cleared enough to rotate the chamber, so you got the same sort of air space in the chamber that you would in loading a .45 long colt, it seemed to work fine but I was never game try a shot with one of thier guns, I stuck to loading Black in a Club Gun

Hotrack I'd tend to move as far away from those guys as possible whenever they appear on the range. You can always go to their funerals to say goodby, it's better than accompanying them in another hearse. Harry
