Remmington [or other contract maker] rolling block musket. Large caliber. If US marked, 45-70.; if made for others, probably .43 Spanish. Hundreds of thousands of contract rifles mase and shipped around the world. Value: 400-1200 depending on variation, as condition does not look great.

Hope this helps, and in time.

Most US Remington Rolling Block military rifles are 50/70 and were made for NY State.

What Joel said; martial marked .45-70 Remingtons are scarce as hen's teeth, but the NYS Militia .50-70s aren't. If the hammer is 'way higher than normal, it is likely an NYS, which have other action peculiarities (too many lawyers in NY State even in 1870?????). I couldn't tell from the pic; maybe younger eyes can.

That looks like my 7mm that my dad bought at Sears in SF in the mid-sixties. I don't have it in front of me, but why the assumption that this one is 45-70 or 50-70?

BTW - it is my hope to one day get mine converted to 50-70...

Thanks,
Lou M

I saw it today, too rusted to see any markings but my calipers put the bore at the muzzle at 0.51. Not worth the gas it took to get there, really ratty.

thanks, Rob
