I shot a 12 bore R-17 for a short time. The only thing I didn't like about it was that it fit me not and I really had to work to make it shoot.

I have a Halifax in 16 Ga. the triggers seem a little hard to me, how tough is it to tune them up ?

The only one I've ever owned was also a Halifax, also had heavy trigger pulls. Beautifully restocked, but unfortunately by a guy who did trap stocks. Added a significant amount of weight and lost the Darne "feel". I lusted for one from the first time I ever had my hands on one, which was in France in 1976. Don't know that I'll ever own another, but I continue to admire them. Darned near (no pun intended) bought a very nice (but very plain) Charlin 16 in France, in about 1996. However, the quirky safety would bother me for field use, same as it does on the Manufrance Ideal--another quirky French gun I also admire.
The French also made a lot of very nice and very underappreciated "barn hinge" guns.

Well now there is absolutely nothing wrong with a "Barn Hinge". How would you get inside to milk ole Bessie without it. I too have a Halifax 16ga which tips the scales 2 oz shy of 6lb, carries like its just not there. Haven't particularlly noticed any trigger problems with it & shoot it quite well "Once" I figure out how to get that Stupid Safety off. A sfety belongs on top under the thumb, that dumb location on the Darne essentially kills its usefulness to me as a hunting gun, & its too light for anything else.

Miller, you don't need use safety on Darne at all. Just do not close breech block complitely and when you need to shoot just beat over top lever by hand to close the breech block and gun is ready to shoot.

Several years ago I had a very nice V19 28ga - quick little bugger and deadly out to 30 yards when I did my part. Since I have 37 inchs sleeves, I made an add on wood stock addition which was attached with screws in the existing stock butt plate holes. I made the add on wood curved to the existing butt shape and for good measure checkered the butt. The future owner had the option of using the lengened stock or the orgional butt plate gun. Yes, I continue to lust over other Darnes - some day.

He's been told that, Geno. Several times, in fact, on several different boards, in several different recent centuries, if I'm not mistaken. Like I said, I'm OK with someone "not getting" a Darne. Whatever the reason. Operator error is as common as anything else. Miller, the best milk house parlor doors slide open.
Best, Ted

Speaking of 28g Darnes, I bought one a few months ago. The gun is a mint little V19 with a semi-pistol grip stock. I sold it to a good friend. He is willing to part with it if anyone is interested. email me at dtercek@atlanticbb.net
