I am looking at possibly purchasing a 16ga W.C. Scott back action with crystal indicator and ejectors. Can anyone shed a little light on the crystal indicator? What are your overall thoughts on this type of gun?

The Scott back action lock is one of the best. One of the main early objections to hammerless guns was there was not a way to quickly check to see if a gun was cocked. Scott's crystal indicator allows one to instantly check the condition of the gun. Works perfectly. Big advantage it has over the more common protruding pins that act as cocking indicators is it does not provide a way for moisture to enter the locks or action.

Joe is right. One of the best. I have one in 10 ga and would not part with it.

I have one in 12 ga. Very high quality, good handling gun. The locks are beautifully made and feature intercepting sears. The crystal windows certainly are a conversation starter at the clays range.

Scott guns of this period are beautifully designed, manufactured and finished and you will find them with all sorts of Gunmakers names on them.
My only concern with them is that, by definition, they are very early hammerless guns, look dated to some and so went out of fashion and as a result tended to get into the 'wrong' hands as in their shooting owners and the 'smiths that worked on them.
A good one in fine condition is a joy to shoot and own but one that has been used, abused and 'smithed by a blacksmith can be a horror.
One tiny tip, if the Crystal Ports are loose or have to be removed for cleaning, cut out some new gaskets for them using the thinnest glove leather you can find, feed well with hide food before fitting. It works a treat.

Here's a midgrade one, possibly made for the American market. Wonderful fit and finish.

Then a second one, more plain, but great workmanship and high condition. Note the difference in the lock design.

Mike, that sort of brings us to almost the full cycle of these. Really nice gun. Do you know what the gold on the trigger guard means ?

YES, I HOPE THE SMALL PICTURE PROBLEM CAN BE FIXED. THERE ARE LOTS OF GUNS THAT DESERVE BETTER DETAIL.

Daryl,

I'm not sure about the gold design on the trigger guard but have seen it on other "Premier" grade guns of the same period.

My gun is 41424 and this is 41426.
No. 41426
