Do 20ga 680's have the same frame as 28ga. 680's?
Can a set of 28ga. bbl's from a 682 be fit onto a 20 ga 686?

682 is 12ga.frame always I believe,but you can get 28ga.bbls for a 20ga 686/7 frame from Rich Cole.

The 682 frame is a large 12 gauge frame, but small gauge barrels are made for it. There is another smaller frame for 20 gauge and some 28 gauge barrels. There is another even smaller frame that is used for 28 and .410 and I don't think that any 20 gauge barrels fit it. To add to the confusion, there are two sizes of 682 frame, but the barrels from both sizes fit either size. They just stick out a bit when the big barrels go on the smaller frame. The same situation applies to 12 gauge frame stocks. They fit both frames but the big stock sticks out a bit on the smaller frame. No big deal. Model 686 and 680 12 gauge barrels will interchange (with minor fitting) on 12 gauge 682 frames. I believe that Rich Cole may explain some of this on his website.

Question: When "fitting" 68x barrels, is it the forend only that needs fitting or is there more to it to get them on face?

Beretta now has a 'baby frame' for 28 gauge/.410. They also sell 20/28 combo sets, plus the above mentioned small gauge barrels that fit 12 gauge frames. Easy to suppose that the 'baby frame' takes different barrels than the 20 gauge frame, but I do not know that. Cole's advertises a list of extra barrels to install on Beretta O/U's. They always fit the barrels to your gun, so your old barrels still work, as I get it. Ejector timing may be part of the fitting. I would email them at Cole Gunsmithing [rcole@colegun.com] questions, and peek at http://www.colegun.com/barrels.php to see what is listed. The FAQ answers some questions, too.

Chuck, if you have Beretta barrels that are not on face on the gun you are fitting them to, you should try other barrels rather than to continue trying to fit the off face barrels. Beretta barrels of the proper frame size usually almost click into place requiring very little fitting.

I currently have a 682 Gold E 32" bbl Sporting that is apparently a "heavy frame" from the FAQ description provided. I'm wondering if you guys think it's worth buying a 28" Multi Choke barrel and straight field stock from Coles to make this into a dual duty gun. The gun is currently 7lbs 12oz with the long barrels and heavy sporting stock. Do you think I can get this gun down to about 7lbs 4oz or less with a slender stock and shorter barrels?

Probably. You could weigh your bbls and your stock, and ask Cole what his weigh.
If you're buying highly figured wood for your gun, you may not save any weight, as that stuff tends to run heavy.
