I recently acquired a G grade Lefever with SN 17XXX. From Mr Elliott's book, this would have been around an 1892 gun. It has damascus barrels proof marked with (as well as - can describe) the 4 sectioned crown with a small plume on the top and a heavier base. It is encompassed by an oval. However, the stamp is worn and I can't tell what is under the crown or see the bottom half of the oval. Could anyone enlighten me a bit on this mark? I assume it to be belgian but that may even be wrong.

It is not a proof mark. It is a maker's trade mark. It is the mark of George Laloux. Laloux was in business from 1881 to at least 1933. In 1910 his trade mark changed to a bee with GL in the wings.

Drop me a line at info@damascus-barrels.com. I wrote a short article for the Lefever Collectors a while back about the trade marks found on Lefevers. I will email you a pdf of it.

Thanks for the great info. So that gets me wondering, does anyone know what the X means on the underside of an I grade Lefever bbl with fluid steel. That is about an 1902 gun.
