Do any of you use rust removers. It seem in some cases with light rust this would be better than polishing (sanding).

Does it effect the steel when re-bluing or re-casing?

I have a couple of guns I am refinishing. Light rust. One is an LC Ideal grade, the engraving is still sharp. If I am going to re-case it, would it be better to use a rust remover to clean it up than to polish (sand) and risk weakening the engraving. Yes I know if the rust has made pits, the rust remover won't remove the pits. The rust is very light.

The members input is appreciated.

Gerald:
For rust that's a bit heavy (don't know in your case) some new stuff called EvapoRust is getting a lot of use. At hardwares nationwide. Cuts rust -- not the steel.

You might realize better results from fine bronze wool rather than 0000 steel wool. The bronze removes rust without disturbing the finish.

Like Mike said, bronze wool does an outstanding job. I use it with Hoppe's No. 9 or gun oil. You can scrub the daylights out of the rust and not harm the remaining finish or natural patina. I use a piece of brass to scrape heavy rust and finish up with bronze wool. Cheers!
