I assume that these Turkey's can't fly anyway! It's all rather fascinating to me over here. smile

There are quite a few driven shoots in UK that put turkeys and other exotic birds out just for decoration and a bit if fun .... they are not to be shot, just admired.

The season before last, I was picking up behind one chap when a full grown turkey came flying along the woodside. No kidding it looked like a Lancaster bomber, it was that big. The Gun in front of me raised his fowling piece at it and in spite of my calling out "No, no," shot it stone dead.

At the end of the drive, he sent his 'cocker (word for female dog rhyming with "titch" previously censored by this board!!) out to retrieve it. Now even as 'cockers go this wasn't a big one; suffice to say the wee dog struggled as best it could, then trotted back to yer man looking a bit puzzled as well it might.

I picked up the late departed, slung it over my shoulder and took it over to the Gun who said "I thought it was a cock pheasant."

"Yes, it's an easy mistake, isn't it?" wink

Cost him 100 fine from the estate owner!!

Eug

Though we have so many around here that they are considered pests, being the filthy bird they are around grain bins and feed bunks, I have only shot two.

The first one was with a little twenty bore and it was on the wing. Not a tough thing to do on one crossing or coming in over head.

I have only shot one wild turkey. Fortune had me corner/suprise it in a ravine. It flew, and flew fast and strong. Shot it in full flight on the wing. Now that was fun. I don't know that it would have been the same if shot on the ground. Jake

At the old Woodmont Club in Western Maryland, turkeys are raised for, of all things, flighted turkey shoots. It's the closest thing to driven grouse in the US. Participation is by invitation only.

I took one with an F150 at 55 MPH. To quote Ron White, "what an elusive creature".

There was a classic episode of WKRP in Cincinnati, the old tv comedy about a radio station, that reported a live Thanksgiving promotional where live turkeys, the white ones raised for Thanksgiving, were dropped from a helicopter over a shopping mall parking lot. They fell like pumpkins into the crowd and the live report sounded like the report of the Hindenberg Crash back in the 1930s (Oh, the Huge Manatee...)
