I have seen upwards of 15 or 16 Winchester 23s and the foream serial #s always match the receiver. If you mean one digit, it sounds like the forearm got mixed up with a consecutive numbered pair of 23s.

Thanks Guy's,Yes it is one single digit different on the end. It's a Model 23 "Custom" with Winchoke's 12 gauge which I think date's to 1987.The barrel's & forarm iron are one # off from the receiver!!Can't find a logical explanation,a factory mistake? What's the odd's of someone having consectutively serial numbered gun's.

eddie k,

Is there any engraving on the receiver? Your pictures do not show the receiver.

The Model 23 Custom Grade did not have engraving, They were made to resemble the Model 21 frame. They were only offered in 1987 and 1988. The were all 12 gauge and they all have 26" choke tubed barrels.

I suspect that there was a factory mistake made when the barrels and the frames were matched during assembly. There is likely another gun with these same serial numbers in reverse order.
I suppose someone might have had a consecutive pair of guns and got them mixed up?
It is not unusual that the barrels of one Model 23 will fit very well on another Model 23 frame. I have tried this just to see, and it worked fine. Even different gauge barrels will fit a different gauge frame, though it would not fire that way, of course.
