Michael: What does your great font of wisdom say regarding a G&H Sporter with the barrel number 137? What say you O' Grand Poobah of the Prewar Sporters? I am anxiously awaiting your sage wisdom to be imparted to this lowly but humble devotee. Further I sayeth Not. Jerry

p.s. I leave for CODY in a little more than 2 weeks will check on your question.

Number 137 should be a 30-06,my notes say it's a 1903 and possibly Tom Shelhamer stock.

My best guess until I get more or better information.

Griffin & Howe next assigned blocks of numbers to particular calibers starting sometime in late 1923.

Barrel Number Caliber Highest No. Recorded
101-150 .30-06 147
151-200 .35 Whelen 166
201-250 .400 Whelen 228
251-300 7X57 300
301-350 .250-3000 314
351-400 25 Whelen* 351
401-500 .30-06 494

* The .25 Whelen was a version of the modern .25-06 or .25 Niedner.

I don't have No. 500 in my database. Would you please tell me about it? I'm surprised it's on an action that could take the 30-06 length.

I've seen very few 300-Savage G&H rifles and as far as I know they never set aside a block of numbers for them.

The earliest one I have in my data is around 1050.

Hey Michael, I sent you info on No. 500 a few years back. I don't have it with me.
Mauser action with the carbine stock. I'll send more info in an email.

There are many reasons why a number might not make it into my database. Would you please resend the data? mjpetrov@acsalaska.net
