It was mentioned above but no one supported it - take a good look at the .405 Winchester. Brass is available as is factory ammo again and you have Teddy Roosevelt's endorsement of the round which he took to Africa. For deer and hogs it will generally shoot flatter than the .45-70 and has a better bullet to retain velocity. In fact, it is not uncommon to find double rifles from Europe chambered in this caliber. No question the 9.3x74 will get the job done well if you don't mind using European developed cartridges. Both the 9.3 and .405 are on the strong side for deer unless you include elk for which they are quite suitable.

I once had a delightful little double rifle chambered in .32 Winchester Special of all things. It was accurate, perfectly powered for deer and the like, and at the time, at least, commercial ammo was very inexpensive, if not widely available.

I would think pretty hard about a .30-30 in your situation. Again it's perfectly powered for what you say you will hunt, components are never going to be a problem, and the factory ammo is everywhere, cheap as all getout, and usually stunningly accurate. Probably would even make up into a lighter rifle as well, so you wouldn't need to lug extra weight through those woods and hills.

Certainly not as exotic as a 7x57R, .333 Jeffery Flanged or even a .33 Winchester, but sometimes plain old plain old can be good.

Or there's the 9,3x72 (not 74) R just to be contrarian...

Sorry, I thought you were building a stalking rifle - on the continent that would normally be a single shot - bit more confusing in the UK where deer are "stalked", but as often with lean bolt action rifle as a single. So what I think you are having built is a medium bore double rifle. I now am inclined to agree with John and others - 9.3x74 - it was created with such a rifle in mind.

My thoughts are
45-70 for large frame
375 Winchester for medium frame
307 Winchester for small frame
Good luck
Mike

p.s. A dream fun cartirdge is the 35 Winchester

I believe that I would seek out a .375 H&H Rimmed chambering. But cartridges would be a chore to find.

I'll agree with you on the Jeffery .333 NE David. I have a neat little Jeffery double that is set up for flanged but, with a simple included ejector change, can shoot rimless rounds. Several pigs have been the victim of that rifle and I'm pretty sure that at 21-2400 f/s and 31-3200 ft lbs it should work well on just about any NA game. The guys at Stars and Stripes Ammo in Florida load for me at a reasonable cost.

Just one man's experience and I'm sure there are many more that would work well for you. Just didn't want David to feel left out!

.33 Winchester, or, for more power, the .348 Winchester. If you are going to reload, these are easy enough. While brass isn't thick on the ground, it is available. Both are very good cases for what you describe.

A double .444 Marlin would certainly fill the bill, for anything, and in the need, I believe they will chamber a .410 shot shell.

My old Rousseau double boxlock ejector in .35 Winchester is a great lightweight woods rifle. I no longer own it but I know where it is.
