Have an 1883 Colt 10 Ga that is stamped AT&SF RR in four different places...on water table, on barrel flat near breech, inside forend wood (in the wood), and on the bottom of the frame on right side in front of trigger guard.
Not having much luck in searching the web to find out if the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad ever used this type of shotgun.
I lettered the gun with Colt and learned that it was shipped to:
Colts Patent Firearms Mfg. Company
San Francisco Agency
San Francisco California
October 10, 1883
I am aware that several years back an unscrupulous gun trader bought up a lot of cheap double guns and marked them up with all sort of historical company stamps in order to increase their value. Since this gun cost more that $100 in the late 1800's, making it's inflation value around $2500 today it seems unlikely it is one of his guns.
Any suggestions on where I might look to determine if this type of gun was in fact ever used by the railroad company it is stamped with would be most appreciated.
