When do you etch the bbls in the ferric solution? Right after rust/boil/card while the bbls are still warm or wait for them to cool down.
And every time you rust/boil/card or after several passes?
Also when if ever do you boil in the logwood extract?

1. If you want to do that (I don't bother) then every other carding. But seriously I find it creates more broblems than anything else.

2. As above.
3. Do you want the barrels to have a black twist or brown? If black logwood boil after the last pass.

Don't forget that you need to neutralise the rusting action too. So drop them in caustic soda at 70 or less degrees for 90 minutes.

Cheers

Rust, etch, then card under running water w/ fine steel wool.
Dry, recoat and allow to rust again. Then repeat.

I never have boiled them till the last coat to get a 'black & white' pattern.

Wether it's wood or metal,, There are many ways to accomplish the desired finish.
Techniques differ / Results count.

I imagine putting warm or hot barrels into the etching soln would greatly increase the etching effect,,and not in a positive way for the production of the desired damascus finish.

Protect the bore(s) while etching the barrels.
