Both ivory bead sights on my Stevens 5100 are broke so I would like to replace them. Yesterday, in my infinate wisdom, I took the front threaded sight post out and not wanting to loose it placed in on a large piece of clear tape. 5 minutes later I couldn't find the tape or the sight!!! (It's an age thing.) So I'm wondering if anybody knows what thread size I need for the front sight. Brownells lists ivory beads with thread sizes of 3-56 and 6-48.

The mid-barrel sight looks like it may be pressed in. I don't see a brass post there. It's broke off level with the rib. I suspect I will have to have this drilled out. When it's drilled out should I have it threaded so that I can put a treaded sight post sight in or use a pressed in ivory sight?

One other question. The red rubber butt pad on this Stevens 5100 is in good shape but worn so smooth that it easily slides off my jacket when I mount the gun. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to roughen this up with damaging it so it is not so slippery?

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

You should be able to identify the front thread size by the drilled hole diameter if you have access to some number sized drill bits. A #31 drill should go in if it's a 6/48 thread, and a #47 drill bit should fit if it's a 3/56 tpi.

The mid barrel bead is probably a tapered press in job. You'll have to pick out the ivory piece; a small drill bit turned by hand in a pin vise might work. Then, using a fine pointed scriber, carefully collapse the edge of the metal portion to pry it out. You can tap in a new one with a nylon punch and some Locktite.

Perhaps try roughing up your pad with some medium sand paper to take the gloss off of it? Might not look real pretty though.

Good luck with your project! Joe

I never could find sights with the right thread size for my 5100's; I finally ordered ones from Brownells that have the ivory post, turned down the posts a little and epoxyed them in. The middle beads are indeed press fit; gunsmither's instructions for getting them out are good. If you use those make sure the new bead base isn't too long; I put one in that I never could get flush and had to re-do it, and there ain't no taking them out without destroying them!

Thanks for all the into. Now I'm just trying to decide if I want to rust blue the barrels before I put the new sights on.
