I am looking at purchasing a Laurona SXS sidelock. This particular gun apparently built in 1967 has ejectors, H & H type quite deep and extensive engraving, front articulated trigger, cocking indicators and hand removeable 7 pin sidelocks. Now it has been by opinion that Laurona is a 3rd or 4th tier maker of pedestrian products. This particular gun serves to prove I may have been wrong. In your experience did Laurona build higher quality pieces? There seems to be no model designation on the gun. It has proof marks of 960 Kgs , 2 3/4" chambers. Fit and Finish are not first class but are not careless & sloppy either. Other stampings are EMN, Q1, 893 & 1360. It is a 12 gauge gun bored improved cylinder and full. All critiques welcome. Thanks, Slate

Laurona SxS here in Australia (box lock) mostly sell S/H for around $450.00 to $500.00 Australian, I have only seen 1 SxS side lock and that was a 5 pin in 16 g. the vast quantity on the market are U/O. they are best described as good working class guns with little problems, fit and finish is ordinary but not poor, reliablity is good. barrells are black chromed. This is the kind of thing that if it fits and you like it and the price is right you can't go wrong but it won,t grow into money.

Slate, I've handled, hunted, and owned a few Lauronas in my lifetime, have a couple in my safe right now, but have to admit that they've all been "pedestrian" boxlocks. I've never ever seen a Laurona sidelock gun and Lauronas are common as dirt around here.

The Gun Digest 29th anniversary issue (1975) lists Laurona o/u under imported shotguns Model 71-G at $250 and Model 71-G at $400.

Thanks for the input guys. I have sent an email off to Laurona. I suspect from what I have learned so far is that they no longer make SXS guns. The older Blue Book shows at least 4 grades of Laurona SXSs. I believe that this is likely the 2nd to top grade. I have noticed this apparent anomally in the past where factories producing workmanlike guns occassionaly take forays into what would seem to be ground unfamiliar to them. Perhaps the more talented of their engineers and workers want to express themselves with something more artistic and challenging then the machine made guns which make up the bulk of their production and sales. On the other hand perhaps they are sampling the grass on the other side of the fence.

I believe they made at least 9 models / grades of sxs. There was the 502. It was a sidelock with Purdey type bolting, Articulated trigger, demi-block, Holland automatic selective ejectors, hand detachable side locks. They also had the 801 Deluxe, with more engraving and upgraded walnut. Their top was the 802 Eagle, with all the above plus special engraving.
