I am looking semi-seriously at a rifle in the Rock Island Auction in December. Their on-line catalog offers scant information on a 100 yr old gun (esp, no mention of the bore). They don't have great pictures in most instances.

So, while this is not a high dollar rifle, I still hate to buy what will not work for what I wish to do. I have asked them questions about the bore and a few other issues but I have never bought from these guys before so I'm looking for info about how much I can trust what I can't read (ie., things that are not mentioned up front) and things might tell me about the rifles condition.

In my only dealing with them, I inquired about selling a double rifle. They shot me a price that was exceedingly low and I later sold that rifle here in the classifieds for about 3.5 times what they quoted. Are they often so far off and in that direction with their estimates?

I appreciate honest opinions based on experience. If you feel uncomfortable posting here, please send me a PM or an email at brentd@iastate.edu and your comments will go no further.

Brent

I also tried to list some guns with them and got the same treatment. Very low guesses. I've also bought some from them and their description was right on the money. If you do buy from them you will never stop hearing from them. They call to remind you that their auction is coming up and you get emails and some catalogs also. Nothing bad just reminders.

I've used Rock Island auction for many years and have had little problems.

You need to ask detailed questions and asked for more photographs if that's what you need.

I'm typing this with my new Dragon software, quite a learning experience.

Thanks for the comments. If anyone is going to drop by RIA between now and December 2, I would love to hear an eyeball account of the rifle I'm looking at (a nothing special but older Marlin 93).

I've used Dragon long ago. It was pretty cool, but I found it too much hassle in the end.

Have bought probably a dozen guns from RI over the last several years. Good descriptions.

I'm now trying to figure out how they run their auctions. I'm a total rookie at this type of deal. But I think I now understand their sealed bids, with that rather hefty 17.5% premium on top of it all.

I also received encouraging answers to a couple of simple questions and have now requested a little more information and some more pictures.

Thanks again.

The buyer’s Premium is 17.5% for credit card, reduced to 15% if purchase is paid for by cash or check. There is a 2% increase in the buyer’s Premium for using the outside services of iCollector or Proxibid. This means that if you bid on iCollector or Proxibid the buyer's Premium is 19.5% for credit card and reduced to 17% if purchase is paid for by cash or check.

Another rookie question. I have my sealed bid in. I'm good with that but how does RIA run through 3003 lots in three days? Are there several concurrent auction sessions going on, or do they really run from 1000 items through per day?

Most of the guns that I have wanted to buy were in a 8 to 12 gun lot. I don't need to fool with 7 - 11 guns that I don't want so I have only bought 2 from them.
