Years ago I had the action of a stainless Ruger O/U blackened in a very attractive satin finish. That shop is no longer in business but, at the time, a high polish was not an option. Anybody know of a process/shop that will 1) blue a stainless gun and 2) do it with a high polish?

Mike,

I've had this done and I've seen it done. Ironically, every piece I've seen was actually painted, not chemically "controlled rusted" as in conventional bluing.

Duracote and similar finishes can be had in matte to gloss varieties. No one can tell its paint if it is done correctly and it is exceedingly durable. I had an Orvis Beretta Uplander done this way with a spectacular wood stock attached and no one would ever have believed it was painted.

My bluing guru told me that stainless steel polished to a high gloss will not take bluing consistantly/evenly. The pores of the metal have to be "rough" in order for that material to blue well. I have seen Winchester and Remington factory barrels, stamped Stainless Steel, in the blued condition. However one time is all they get. The only way they will blue the second time is to be bead blasted and then hot tanked. That is what I have been told.

Brownells sells the solution for hot blueing stainless. I don't know if it works on all alloys. I suspect not. Brownells Tech Support may give you a lead on who is currently purchasing and making available SS blueing.

Another option is iron plating then common blueing/black oxide hot salt processing.

Thanks for the leads, fellas. I did some web surfing myself to see what may have changed in 25 years. Some processes I hadn't heard of but seems like a high polish is still not an option.

Maybe if I visit some handgun forums I can get some testimonials. Interesting observation on the factory barrels, Dennis.

Mike,
Only two ways to get high gloss that I know of (but I don't know much about this). One is black chrome. The other is iron plate, polish and blue as normal.

Ever seen an example, Chuck?
