I have a nice old Simpson double, 16ga. that I recently traded for. Never shot it yet. Got to thinking, is it standard 2 3/4" chamber or might it be shorter?

Any input appreciated. Guessing it was made in the 30's.

Thanks, JD

Most likely it has 65mm chambers, about 2 9/16". Suhl is the right spelling.

Perhaps a helpful link on the issue of 2 1/2" chambers and 16ga (someone kindly shared this with me when I asked a similar question regarding my French SxS with 65mm chambers), so I'll pass it along:

Most German guns will be marked with chamber length, on the barrel flats. Look for either 65MM (2 1/2") or 70MM (2 3/4").

From what I understand, they didn't always mark 65mm, it was understood until the 70mm option was popular, then they started marking.

So, no mark or 65mm = 2-1/2".

70m = 2-3/4

There is most likely a date code on the flats as well,look for something like 9/31 (sept 1931) this will probably help with the chambers as well.
