I don't know if the gun was a real WF item, but I surely thought the shooting of it was very poor (dis)information for the public. IMO, they "proved" nothing and set a potentially dangerous precedent.

You have to love the guys on that show. They always say, that if it shoots, it is worth more money. Give me a break. If the gun has a clear bore(doesn't have to be safe to fire) and a hammer that has a strong enough force to snap a cap, primer, or throw a good flint against a good frizzen of course it will shoot! It doesn't mean squat to me. But, I may say that as well, to get a free chance to shoot a cannon or an original 1860 Colt, etc. I have seen TONS of guns marked Wells Fargo and Co. Doesn't mean a thing to me either unless there is a letter from Wells Fargo to back it up. That is JMHO anyhow.

Wells Fargo did indeed buy different type guns for their agents I have a Colt Police Positive Special marked "W F & Co" on the butt. Fortunately this gun lettered as being sold to Wells Fargo by Colt and is so stated on their letter to me.
I have no idea as to how you would go about authenticating a Manton shotgun.
As far as Pawn Stars goes it has little to do with reality. The have more "experts" on call than most museums. If I had to rely on this much outside expertise when I owned and operated my business I'm sure I would have gone broke. I treat this show as entertainment nothing more.

Wells Fargo used to have a museum, with a bunch of artifacts and records in San Francisco. I dont know if its still there. I bought a junky Greener That was stamped W.F &Co. I didnt expect it to be real. I took it to that museum, you can tell how long ago that was, try walking into a bank with a shotgun now..The very nice "Curator" was able to assure me that it in fact was a fake..

Most WF&Co, Ex bought from IGCo. were Flues models, 24 inch 10 ga. hammer guns but I have an invoice(copy) of an Ithaca Baker model being sold to them. Also had the gun in hand but was just offered the courtesy of viewing. I did get a copy of the invoice that had a serial number in the 3000 range if I remember correctly. I am sure they bought from other companies as well as Ithaca but there are a lot of fakes, some I was able to confirm as NOT WF&Co. Ex. Ithaca made.

I also have a Colt D.A. 38 marked "WF&Co" on the buttstrap circa 1908. It came with a copy of an article entitled: "Wells Fargo & Co. and Colt Firearms" that mentions this particular gun by serial number
which is 268554.

Best Regards, George

One of the goobers on "Storage Wars" came up with a whacked off Ithaca with WF&Co stamped on the side. The "expert" appraisor varified it was a fake, fake, fake. And then put a totally outrageous value on the thing anyway.....that show sucks...too.

Whats the show filmed in Denver? I have the Alex Henry Muzzleloader featured on that show in for a restoration, it's almost done too. The "civil war collector" that ended up with it on the show was all BS. Actually one of my better customers paid cash for....no bowie knife trade like on reality tv.

I saw that one and had to laugh. It looked to have been just a cut Ithaca that somebody stamped WF& Co on in a totally different style that the Ithaca engraved name. It was a totally worthless PIS.
