Hi all, I ran across this one on Steve Cobbs site. It's marked Charles Boswell, but I'm wondering if this one is not a continental gun and marketed by Boswell? Looks like the engraving is aftermarket. Here's the description:

"CHARLES BOSWELL SIDELOCK HAMMER EJECTOR GUN 28 BLS. WITH BRILEY CHOKE TUBES INSTALLED D.T. STRAIGHT STOCK TOP TANG SAFTEY ROLLED EDGE TRIGGER GUARD 14 1/8 X 1 3/8 X 1 15/16 DECELERATOR PAD GUN HAS BEEN RECONDITONED BLE,CC,WOOD ALL 100% - 6 LBS 12 OZS.- GAME SCENE ENGRAVED BY N. HERSEN" It's also a self cocker.

And a couple pics

What's your take on this one?

All the best!

Hmmm. It just doesn't look right. English hammer ejector guns are rare and command high prices. Looking at this there is poor fit between metal to metal parts and against wood to metal parts. The engraving is not typical either. The Boswell name was sold away in 1980 so it is possible that someone who bought the name has had an older hammer gun somewhere in the white; converted it to ejector and had it finished somewhere making it a genuine Boswell gun in name but not in style. I don't know what to think of it without having in my hands but the workmanship doesn't do it justice. I would like a peek at the proof marks. Maybe Smallbore knows who has the right to the Boswell name. Lagopus.....

Hi, the workmanship just does not seem to be up to Boswell's standard. I have a Boswell 16b and the quality is excellent, this one seems like it was just tossed together. As I said, looks like the engraving is aftermarket.

I know Chris Batha had the name and was making guns under the Boswell name, don't know if he still is.

Thanks so much for your insight!

Greg

Good morning in North Dakota! Greg I suppose only Chris will have the answer. As I say, it could be a genuine Boswell but it doesn't do it for me. Lagopus.....

Hello, hope the day is fine across the pond! I agree with you on this one. You really don't see many self cocking ejector hammerguns in this price range, with perhaps Siace being the exception. This one is just odd for me also.

Thanks again and all the best!

Greg

gjw, the Boswell books reside down in Florida. If you have Brown's big books the telephone# is there for you to call. A ck on the serial # should answer your questions. Or maybe not.

And the engraver signed his name, "M. Hermsen" on the floorplate?

I think you will find his name is Neil Hermsen. I have a 20 ga Boswell Bolino engraved by him. You will find he does engraving for Turnbull.

It's a mongrel, to the point of being feral. Recent engraving, and both self cocking and ejecting? Slight chance The action might have once been an English forging but the rest is a motley assemblage. Hammers are a cheap imitation of Birmingham style. Even the most workaday original Boswell boxlocks were not the mutt this one is.

Oh dear.

and Chris Batha does still hold the right to use the Boswell name.
