Now that I am semi-retired I would like to occasionally do some wood refinish and be able to properly remove wood dents, fix cracks and properly prep and apply finish. I would like to find a book that the forum members would recommend for reference. Normally I send the guns out to one of the professionals that are highly skilled. That said occasionally I find a gun or two that could use some TLC that would not warrant putting a lot of money in. Your recommendations are appreciated. Thanks Phil

Tony Treadwell's book - is the post at the top of the page has a good chapter on stock work.
other than that - you may also do a web search - I would bet there are you tube videos and many pages with instuctions

There are a few top choices:
Shotgun Technicana The Craft of The Gunsmith The Art of Gunsmithing
Or... contact Cornell Publications and order the complete set of Double Gun Classics magazine as printed copies. A wealth of information is there!

Newell - Gunstock Finishing and Care
The best, most complete, and lie-free wood finishing book there is. Out of print but available. Not a collection of handed down tales, but written by a chemist who actually knows what he's talking about.

One of the best treatments of stock refinishing can be found at Uplandjournal.com. Go to the Upland Discussions, then Firearms. The topic is a sticky at the top of the page.

Thanks guys for all of the feedback and recommendations. Not that this site does not get spirited at times, but the on line camaraderie and openness to share information is what keeps me checking in to see what is up every day. I turned 55 in March and then "'Semi Retired" I have a lot of catching up to do to get those things accomplished I always said I would do when I retired.
Thanks Phil
