A while back I was looking for a Turkish blank and got an email from this same fellow that was mentioned here on another post a couple of week ago, he had a few blanks to offer but neither the wood nor his prices were what I was looking for. After a bit of searching I decided to drive down to Mt. Orab Ohio to see Clay Barker at Luxus Walnut….a really nice guy, and double gun enthusiast as well ,gave me a tour of the place and access to his entire wood inventory, talk about a kid in a candy shop, nothing like walking on a pile of exhibition blanks…well almost nothing.

Got a deal on five great blanks of my own choosing, looked at some fantastic wood, had a great time in Cincinnati and might have lined up a quail hunt to boot…was well worth the drive, the blanks are all dry and properly laid out, so there’ll be no disappointment come stocking time, I’ve bought wood from pictures before, some worked out really well, and some went in to the kindling bucket.…. for me this is the only way to buy wood from now on.

I've had great luck with Clay. I am expecting 3 more blanks any day now. He has some really nice stuff. I am wanting to make that trip one day myself.

He is less than an hour from my house. First time I went there the blanks seemed to all be begging me to take them home with me. I was limited to two blanks for two projects and found that it was easy to find five sets of two blanks. Then to choose only one of these was real hard. Sometimes you get into sensory overload when you see so many great blanks. He knows wood and is very easy to deal with just bring plenty of money. Good wood is not cheap and when you get a chance to buy it in person you need to act.

When you realize how much work it is to get a big walnut log cut and hauled to where you can mill it and the odds of finding a superlative blank the prices don't seem as exorbitant.

Clay told me that the only way to get most the huge logs out of the mountains is by horse and cart, the trees are often times in places where no roads exist, and the extraction is quite difficult and dangerous, and as our appetite for nice wood keeps growing they have to search further and deeper in to the mountains...so if you factor all the work that goes in to each piece I would say they are worth every penny

I bought one of their walnut blanks via e-mail last year and was pleased with the quality and price.

CJ, would you just stop what you are doing and take up fishing or something? I don't want to see any pictures of your guns with a stick of Turkish walnut on them and I am sending an e-mail to Dave to have you permanently banned from this board.
