I have an older Spanish o/u 12 ga which will open up when the top barrel is fired. The top lever spring seems to be weak, is this the problem? I have cleaned out all the locking slots

Mike,
Your weak top lever spring might be part of the issue but its more than likely wear on your barrels or worn locking block surfaces that are causing it to spring open upon firing. Depending on the make you might still be able to get replacement parts.

Worn locking bolt .The simplest solution is to have it welded up with a carbon steel and re fit it . The chances of getting an original over sized blot from the importer are very slim .

Gunman, Can you elaborate a bit more on this fix? If the bolt is worn and in need of recontouring, would the barrel notch require the same?

Its is simpler to build up the bearing surface of the bolt than to weld up and re cut bites . It may well be that the bite has worn and will need to be "dressed " but this is usualy only a matter of filing it to even out any steps or exessive wear on the leading edge . It is rare that the amount of wear will so great that this needs much work . It is of course a matter of experience in getting the built up bolt dressed correctly and so is getting the two surfaces to bear correctly so that as the bolt closes or goes home that the pressure of the bolt is not to great but has the maximun surface area in contact and as with any wedge the maximum grip will be attained when the bolt is fully engaged .
