Where does one purchase the clay pigeons that they use in the olympics ? No matter how slight the hit they explode in a dramatic purple cloud.

HOS,

They are known as 'flash Targets'

White Flyer markets them on the East Coast. Others may as well.

Edit: There are three distributors listed in your area here:

Flash Target
Flash targets are found in the 110 mm configuration and are specifically prepared with a pouch of fluorescent colored powder underneath or on top of the dome. The flash target explodes on impact and provides a puff of colored smoke to show the "kill" more clearly. These targets are used for the final events in International competitions and for televised events.

Make your own, poster paint powder dropped into dome cavity and sealed with a glued on paper disk.

Commercially, the exploding clau [igeons are about four times as expensive as ordinary clay pigeons.

They are also much more fragile, with lots of target breakage.

International Clay targets are certainly not more fragile, flash or otherwise. They are more sturdy because they are thrown at a much higher speed and must withstand the shock of higher acceleration. The fact that one sees fewer pieces is a testimonial to the skill of the shooters.
