If it fits like a glove with the cheek rest, won't it shift the position of your face over if you remove the cheek rest, thereby messing up your "fit" into the stock? It'll be like adding cast off, won't it?

You would think it would add cast off, but I've removed cheek rests before, and I haven't noticed any difference. I think it's because your cheek really rests on top of the comb, while the cheek rest seems to be more of a chin rest, if that makes sense. They add stability to your face, but don't seem to add any appreciable cast on that I can detect.

I would not have thunk that, but if you have tried it before, that's more than I have done. I was only theorizing.

I'd leave the cheekpiece alone. It's had it since it was made, so why change it. No good reason I can think of.
And, yes, jOe, the paint is nice. It may not appeal to everyone, but it's excellently done. De gustibus....

I'm not a big fan of cheek rests, but that one looks pretty nice, I like the way it sweeps back from the grip. I'd leave it alone if it were mine. Steve

Mark Will you post progress pictures as you whack off the cheekpiece? Thanks Mike

I will indeed. If I do remove it, it will be purely for cosmetic reasons, as I did here:

I liked the Cheek Piece much Better, but of course that's just me. It wasn't my gun.

Certainly isn't a new procedure, H.E. Leman and J. Fordney, just to name a few, use to paint on curl for their stocks. Also, that Meriden is a keeper, Mark!! How does it shoot?

I'd leave it alone. I just don't care for the artwork on the stock at all. It just looks out of place. No way could I bring myself to remove the cheekpiece. Refinish it maybe, if it needed it, but that's about all.
