Can I pick your brains please ? Has anyone ever had an old action crack in the area (I believe it's called the root) where the action flat meets the standing breech ?
I seem to recall being told that it can happen when an old style action, originally designed for black powder proofed guns, had in later years either had modern smokless cartridges put through them or ideally, when they'd been successfully nitro proofed.
The reason I ask is that I've been talking to a guy who's thinking of sending a nice R.Robinson boxlock with good damascus barrels off to be nitro proofed so he can safely continue to use it as a walk up gun.
Now, this particular gun is a Birmingham made boxlock, nice and solid so I wouldn't think it's an issue , but are some older sidelock and hammer actions prone to breakage here when shooting larger loads or higher velocity nitro cartridges ?
I realise the proof issue isn't a worldwide thing but since the guns owner told me that he and the original owner had been firing nitro through it for years without any apparent damage to the barrels, I guess it must happen a lot.(not the cracks, but shooting nitro through BP proofed guns)
So, has anyone had problems with cracks ?
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Nick.

"Cracks"? That too much of a straight line, even for me.

A problem with Ithaca Flues 20 bore shotguns. May be from shooting hotter loads than intended for the gun.

There's the possibility of damage to any gun from any load. It doesn't mean anything that the gun has been fired safely with nitro or heavier loads than the gun was built for. My question is why try to nitro proof a gun that performs with lighter loads the way it is?

All three appear to start at the junction of the watertable and breech, the point of highest stress, and two crack through pins

It seems that locating a pin in line with a stress point makes the area more prone to cracking.

I saw a MDL 21 20 gauge cracked as you describe. The story was some early ones did not have proper heat treatment. This tells me it can happen on any gun if the right screw up happens.

For what it's worth, the only examples of actions cracking I've ever seen are here on this forum. Seems fairly rare.

The Flusie managed without the hammer axle being in the line of the crack. Don't the Brits call the junction between standing breech and water table the "breakoff"? Does seem rare but I've also never seen a burst or split barrel outside a gun shop or internet fotos.

I read somewhere that it took gun manufacturers a while to figure out that if they left a sharp intersection between the water table and the standing breech, the frames could be prone to cracking. The solution was to radius the intersection of those two planes. Did not completely eliminate the problem, but helped.
