Opinions on this gun solicited...I have wanted a German 98 Mauser Classic Stalking Rifle for quite some time! I just bought this on Gunbroker and I have a few question? Is this most likely a 8x57J or S ? Isn't there a difference in the bullet diameter? Also what is the commercial American ammo? J or S ? Are both loaded in Europe? Are both available in America...Where? TIA. Jerry

It looks like a nice piece, and the price is right. The phillips adjustment screw in the trigger mechanism is curious, however.

I think you did well, nice looking old mauser at a nice price.

The phillips head screws definately mean it was updated some later on, I don't believe they were used much before 1940.

It would be a good idea to slug the bore and do a chamber cast before obtaing any Ammo or components.

I picked up a similar old sporter awhile back and mine will require the .318 rounds M88 specification because of the bore size and tight neck.

Isn't there a difference in the bullet diameter? Yes, J is .318" and S is .323".

Also what is the commercial American ammo? J or S ? American commercial ammunition is loaded with the .323" bullet, but pressures are deliberately kept low to reduce the danger of accidents caused by using the wrong size bullet. Also, late model J bullet rifles used chambers cut to S dimensions, so that there is enough room in the neck area to allow for normal neck expansion.

Are both loaded in Europe? Yes.

Are both available in America...Where? No, Graf & Son, Midway have the Sellier & Bellot J ammunition, but only in the rimmed (8X57JR) version

The hex head adjustment screw could easily be a recent replacement and does not necessarily indicate anything about the authenticity of the rifle generally.

.318" bullets are easy to create from .323" bullets using inexpensive Lee bullet sizing dies.

I suggest that you slug your bore before spending anything on special ammo. I've slugged a number of early 1888s and 1908 Mannlicher-Schoenauers and found their grooves to run around 0.327"-0.328" and in every case that I've tried, the 0.323" jacketed bullets have done just fine.

Now I understand that 1888s and 1908s are not 1898s, but you might be surprised anyway!
Regards, Joe

Jerry here you go-- Hello Alvin Linden the 8x57 has a diameter (NBD.) of 0.318 and is indeed an excellent cartridge for the deer of medium size, I have a Obendorf (byf) rifle ( he means a WW2 gewehr but with a Bayer Fabrike marking- this rifle is indestructible in spite of the many cartridges it has fired (military ball?) as a side note here, isn't the 8mm closer to the 0.323 NBD--RWTF
