This pistol was liberated from a Japanese soldier in the South Pacific by a friend's father.

John would like to buy some ammunition for it. He has asked if I could learn anything about the pistol and what ammo it will shoot.

Measuring the feed on the magazine reveals that the over-all length of the cartridge to be just a whisper under 2.5 mm. Without a mic, the best I can do with the bore is a steel ruler's measurement of 8mm.

Any help here would be appreciated. Gun make, caliber how to determine the caliber, where ammo could be bought, ET. AL.

I think the length of that cartridge would be about 2.5CM or 25MM. 1 inch = 25.4mm so 2.5mm = .098", the primer cup is undoubtably longer than that.

your pistol is chambered for a cartridge known as 8mm Nambu.
In addition to Graf's as noted above,I believe it is avaliable from Bufflo Arms.

I do believe that Buffalo Arms has ammunition made in-house. They do a great job with their ammo and custom components.
