A chamber casting is always advisable on these guns. There is a good chance the 7.8/57 is for a .318 bore 8x57R Mauser. The 8.8/72 could be the 9.3x72R especially if it was proofed for lead bullets. These bbls often had quite deep grooves, thus a small bore size in relation to bullet Dia. Doesn't hurt to slug the bore either to determine groove dia for proper bullet dia selection.

I would think any cartridges for the drilling would be rimed ones.

How does one make a casting for a drilling chamber; wax? Slugging the bore; how is that done?

Drillings have been a great mystery to me.

Pooch

The metal cerrosafe is what is used, it melts below 212 degrees, that is below the boiling point of water.

Clean the chamber, block the bore ahead of the chamber, fill with melted cerrosafe, remove the casting, measure.

Head to Amarillo and I will show you and let you shoot

Are drillings rifles ever nitro powder? The barrels seem so thin.

"The metal cerrosafe is what is used"

Yeah I read this all the time, but since I don't have any around my house I just use the nearest old candle. Never had a problem determining the proper cartridge.

With kind regards,
Jani
