A 40-70 Maynard no.10 hunting & target model with optional fore stock.I have read that Maynard 40 cals. used larger bores,(as compared to Sharps or Winchester),not true in this case. After slugging the bore,.412 groves reduced to .410 at the muzzle with a .401 bore at the muzzle. The rate of twist is 1 in 28 ,as marked on the 32" barrel,I guess it's an express rifle.

An unmarked .64 cal. shot barrel came with the rifle, must be a later addition,it it hasn't been fitted and appears unfired.

Sadly,I will never know how the perfect bore will shoot, some %#*&@ idiot ran a drill into the chamber and rifling, off center and about 3 1/2" deep.I plan to to have it relined to a 40-60 Maynard, modern dimensions and faster twist,I think choices are limited with available liners.

That barrel looks like it is 4 FEET long. At least.

Nice rifle. Amazing how well those rifles shoot.

Maynards are nice rifles and they all seem to shoot well. I've owned a couple over the years but down to my 1882, 44-100 Long-Range. It also has a shotgun barrel, a 38-55 by Niedner.

Michael,It's your fault!Your Gun Digest artical first sparked my interest,I had no idea!. A model 16, 25-20ss, that came off Ned Roberts estate sale in 1948,was sold a couple of weeks ago.It too had a bad bore and a replacement Lyman sight, but looked to be a very nice rifle. It sold for a couple of hunded over my high bid while I was sitting in the hospital with my wife,(she is fine).

Your the BPCR shooter,if I go with a 16 twist rather than 18,could it harm the accruacy of the standard 330 grain PP bullet?I may try a heavier bullet or maybe not.

What I know about .40s is negligible. But I find an 18 to be good and a 16 twist to be even better in a .45 caliber rifle, so I would hesitate to go with an 18" twist in a .40. But I know nothing about that 330 grn bullet. I'm not the guy to ask I'm afraid.

Ned Roberts Maynard, great, was this at a online auction with a link or ?

The only reason I ask is I have Mr. Roberts inventory around here someplace and it would be fun to see if it's was included at that time.

I had not thought about the Gun Digest article in some time, yesterday I was talking about it on the phone with a friend and now today you mention it. I've not published a lot but the Maynard article is still my favorite.

Ric,
Maynards are maybe my most favorite single shot. Your very lucky to own it.
What is the barrel length please?
I have 4 different 40 cal rifles and if you wish I can check the twists on them. (sadly I haven't shot any of them for at least 10 years so I just don't remember the twist). My Farrow style rifle is a 40-60 Maynard. It would be a great choice for your relining.

Are you going to the Heritage gun show this morning? If yes we can talk there. I'll put a 40-60 case in my pocket just in case. I'll PM my cell number and you can call if you are going so we can hook up.

Ric,
It was good seeing you at the show..did you buy anything? Lots of nice stuff and I had a chance to talk to a number of old gunmaker friends. I bought a book is all. I'm looking for a Mannlicher-Schoenauer but didn't see any. (I don't know why I want one just do)
I was thinking about your rifle after I gave you a 40-60 round. What I was thinking is that it may be difficult to find a 32" liner and then of course in 40 is not very common. What about just taking it out to 44 or 45? Might be easier.
By the way your gun looks like a 1882 version or is it an 1873 version? If its a 73 that round I gave you is going to be much help.
I think a 44-100 would be grand. smile

Good seeing you again. Take care.

I think that gun would be a hell of a rodeo ride if you made it a .44-100. I'd go for a .38-50 Rem or the equivalent thereof.

Lynn,
I contained myself, didn't buy anything. That was a nice little show, nice not having to walk by a thousand junkers to find one worth looking at.The original long range, side hammer Sharps was nice,he wouldn't take my wifes little Lincoln in trade though :)A fairly priced, miniature Snyder caught my eye,I didn't pick it up for fear I wouldn't put it back down!
I scratched the MS itch a long time ago with a pre 1910 9MM,nice rifles.
I think I would want a heaver barrel for a 44-100!I talked to Mr.Bly,(the Maynard man)yesterday,he said length would not be a problem.
