As a German, I have to be a little bit more precise: Not german Drillings but Bockbüchsflinten...! I know, it's difficult for Americans to pronounce, so the short form is "BBFL" ;-)

Hello Ami, of course you are right, the soft solder was quite common but nevertheless Merkel had hold a Petent on this method of fixing the barrels O/U, please look here: http://www.jagdwaffensammler.de/bockdoppelbuechse-gebr-merkel/laufverbindung-pat-merkel.htmlI'm sure, your german allows you to understand it... ;-) The only problem is, this Patent is from 1930 and the Gun of Texasjack is out of 1929...! But of course, Merkel would have had any other Patents. I really don't understand this series of posts as I haven't followed this very closely, but from what I remember Merkel used the term Weichlot on the top tube and on the order form. Was it not on the additional tubeset? Possibly Merkel was using the technology prior to filing a patent? Kind Regards, Raimey rse

In Umgehung vorstehend beschriebener Übel- und Umstände besteht die Erfindung aus einer einfachen und doch sicheren mechanischen
Verbindung, die mit der Weichlotverbindung vereinigt wird bzw. sogar ohne diese bestehen könnte. Die Läufe brauchen nicht weit auseinander
zusammengesetzt zu werden. Beim Zusammensetzen geschieht die Nachbearbeitung so, daß nur ein bestimmter Teil nachgearbeitet zu werden
braucht, der, falls er fehlerhaft bearbeitet wurde, im Verhältnis zu den Läufen in pekuniärer Hinsicht kaum einen Wert besitzt, so daß also
gewissermaßen bei fehlerhafter Bearbeitung der mechanischen Verbindung ein Ausschuß so gut wie ausgeschlossen ist. Dadurch, daß die vorliegende
mechanische Verbindung sehr fest und sicher ist, genügt als Zusatzverbindung eine solche mit Weichlot, die nur eine Wärme von etwa 23o° benötigt,
so daß also niemals eine Strukturveränderung des Materials und damit eine Minderwertigkeit des ganzen Gewehres erzeugt werden kann.

Gunwolf, all the shotgun shells I have shot in the gun are plastic. Paper shells may be available, but they are few and far between here in the USA.

Texasjack, bad news: the dealer who auctions the three barrel Merkel set will NOT export to the USA!!! (He sent me a message) If you want it nevertheless, you have to find a) a german dealer and b) an exporter....
Maybe you can get help with the German Guns Association?
