Raimey,
think you are right, Merkel has used the Weichlot prior to the Patent.
Our question was, what Patent is meaned with the D.R.P. = Deutsches Reichspatent on the under lug of Texasjack's Merkel..... They had many patents......

Wolfgang:
True, DRP could be one of many but at a glance at this time Merkel knows that they have some novel idea centered around the soft solder and are advertising on the tube the term Weichlot as well as on the cards. So I'd say they have full intent on a patent submission as well as protection. Why not advertise on the floorplate in generic terms of DRP without the actual DRP Nr. because they don't possess it just yet? I say every stamp and position of the stamp has/had a purpose. It was not happenstance.

Kind Regards,

Raimey,
I would subscribe to your view.

Texasjack,

don`t worry, if you cannot get the Merkel with the three barrels.
I've just looked for some similar pieces: (all from dealers, no auctions!)

MERKEL BBF

1.

2.

I ASKED THIS DEALER. YES, HE WILL EXPORT FOR ABOUT 400 EURO TO AN AIRPORT OF YOUR CHOICE

1000 EURO is about 1288 $

Texasjack,

I started two requests, one to Brenneke and one to Zeiss
Here come the answers:

1. Brenneke: it is not possible to shoot the 16/70 Classic Magnum out of a non-magnum proofed Gun.

2. Zeiss: can only say that the scope with the number 32085 has been built in 1929 0r 1930.......nothing new, we already know better!

Would be nice, if you will keep me informed on the other Merkel subjects.

Best Regards,
Wolfgang

Gunwolf, I have decided not to pursue gun purchases from Germany. Too much cost/hassle involved in shipping, importation, customs, etc. I am told there is an annual gun show in Tulsa every November typically with a large inventory of fine German guns. Also a similar annual show in Ohio. Not to mention, they are readily available on all the major US gun auction sites. Also, I have become convinced that there is no substantive savings by buying from Germany, even before the additional costs are considered. The general rule, "things cost more in Europe," does indeed apply to firearms as well as everything else. So, I will try to restrict feeding my "addiction" to local sources of these fine double guns, drillings, etc. As to my future purchases, if I think I got something really great, I will keep you and others posted via this website. Thanks again for all your help in researching this gun and helping me search for "the missing barrel"!

Texasjack,

I do understand your decision very well. I think you are right, because of the trouble one may have by buying and importing a gun from Europe. It was a pleasure helping you with the gun history and I`m sure to hear or read something about your next (german?) gun. ;-)

All the best,
Wolfgang

Texasjack,
Check Simpson Ltd.,they have several Drillings, recently imported, mostly post war, but some pre war. Not "firesale prices",but seemingly normal prices. No import problems.
