Looking to have some gun parts de-nickeled to prep for refinishing.

Who can I get to do the work?

Any local plating shop can strip them for you.....they dip them in their acid tank in a wire basket and strip the nickel off.....slick as a whistle....they then wash them with fresh water, oil and package them for your pick up....

Yellow pages for your local chrome, nickel and copper plating shops.....

Best,

Doug

I would advise caution in approaching a "local plating shop".

Many of the processes they use can harm fine finished items especially if they are made from more than one metal. The old style electrolytic process for stripping Ni from steel will destroy brass, bronze, and copper parts in a twinkling, and severely etch the steel if the operator does not take care. In my experience plating shops also specialise in losing small parts.

Brownells sell a universal nickel stripper that comes in a two part liquid formula that will safely remove nickel from virtually any substrate without etching it. Without seeing a data sheet or MSDA I can't say exactly what the formula is but I can hazard a guess, and it'd be safe enough for both the gun and you or your gunsmith. That's the way I'd go.

I have used the Brownell process. It worked as above but took a very long day to get it done. As for the local plating shop, if they don't have an FFL they cannot legally hold the receiver overnight.

I have an old drilling that has some flaking I'd like to remove on the sideplates that look to be nickel plated. Will the Brownell's stripper affect adjacent metals? Will the stripped steel be bright or dull? Thanks.

My experience was that it did not affect the steel or engraving but it came out dull and needed very light cleaning/polishing.

What do you do with to surface after you have removed the nickle? Will it take a blue? Does it need a further prep before something can be done? Thanks

It is just steel....once the plating is removed you can refinish the steel any way you wish, case color, blue, re-plate or spray paint or whatever.......nothing changes....just like stripping any other antique steel part which has been plated......

You must prep it just like you would any other piece of bare steel that you wish to re-finish.....Prep it for whatever finish you are applying......

Nickel, chrome, copper, brass etc. plating is a process which deposits metal onto the substrate, stripping it off leaves the substrate as it was prior to the plating.......the metallurgy does not change, you are only removing the plating.....

The Brownells nickel strip is DIY garbage IMO, I would use a professional plating shop to strip the nickel or any other plating off, unless you live in a third world country.... The professional stripping process is far more precise and controlled with the modern equipment they use now days, than the DIY stuff and the parts come out pristine IMO, and they can strip it fast.....I've never had any missing parts or problems with professional plating shops....I guess it depends on where you live....?.....

Best,

Doug
