Now I'm not one of those hoarders buying up ammo & components for the looming apocalypse. I venture to the skeet range maybe 8-12 times per year.
Not wanting "Baby" (my damascus Elsie) to go hungry I forked over $60 bucks plus tax for two one pound jars of SR-7625.
OUCH!

That seems to be the going rate for powder where I live too. $30 per pound. It doesn't matter if it is rifle, pistol or shotgun powder, it is all on avg. $30/lb. Shot is still right at $50 a bag too. Will it ever return to normal? Is this the new normal?

I load about 4-5k shotshells most years, and use Hodgdon's Clays shotgun powder. In recent years the price has increased from $90 for an 8-pound jug to $145. Then, they had a plant mishap in their Australian manufacturing plant, and now there is none for the next six months.

Shot in my area has increased from $25 for a 25-pound, up to $45.

Oh well, life goes on....

Clays is $119 for 8 pounds here. Red Dot is still $98 for 8 pounds. I have no idea if our supplier has it or not, but that is the price.

I shoot everything I own with low pressure now.I had a recipe I liked with Solo 1000 and Rem STS primers, but can't seem to find that powder anymore. I was at the Ohio State trap shoot to do some shopping on powder, wads and primers. I can't find Rem.STS primers that are affordable. $58 a 1000 is up there IMHO. I did buy 8# of Select powder @ $98 and Win. 209 primers at $29 a 1000. It is a little harder for me to keep in low pressure without those Rem. primers with Rem. and Win. hulls.

Dave,

I load Solo 1000, too, for low pressure loads. Sent 5 off to Tom Armbrust for testing and was very pleased with the results. They use Cheddite primers and the gold Nitro hulls. P.M. me if you are interested in the recipe.

Regarding a substitute for 7625, which seems to have gotten way more expensive lately, you might look at Nitro 100. I like 7625 in low pressure 12 ga loads, but the Nitro 100 has similar performance but at about 60% of the per-load cost. I have gone back to the Nitro 100 just for that reason.

For low volume shooters the current component prices make shooting factory ammo a reasonable choice - even tho the prices on that are stupid too in many cases. Even WalMart has ammo at sorta affordable prices.

The semi-good news is that some dealers like Powder Valley do have product in stock and prices less than outrageous. Some clubs have reclaimed shot available too so some relief can be had there as well.

Just generally not a happy time

besta luck

If you don't need eight pounds, buy eight pound kegs and resell them after you take your couple of pounds out. I'm sure your friends would appreciate the lower prices also. There is no place in reloading for one pound containers of powder for thirty bucks apiece.
