Would anyone confirm for me that from the proof marks on this gun made between 1885 and 1891.... Show a later Burmingham nitro proof mark? Thank you.

Definitely nitroproofed at Birmingham and, if I am not mistaken, the 3 tons per sq. in. makes it under the 1954 Rules of Proof. But, cannot tell what year after those rules were adopted, except that it must be before 1989 when everything went metric.

Interesting. The SN places it for the period your asking about, but the proof marks really don't. I see marks for the 1925 Rules of Proof and 1954 Rules of Proof. But see no markings for a shot charge or Nitro Proof (the gun was proofed for Nitro, per the BNP and Crown mark). Wonder of the gun was rebarreled.
Best!

Thanks very much...that is why I asked ...the proof marks are there but the dates are off from what I just found is an 1887 manufacture date...the barrel has the serial number and the rib on top says the usual for Woodward plus the usual Whitworth steel sentence.....the barrel thickness is at 28 and 30.....so that raised an eyebrow....

The barrels appear to be dovetailed rather than chopper lump which would make me wonder if they were replacement even more??

Those are newer barrels than when the gun was built. Birmingham Proof viewer code, bottom left of barrel flat in picture, will tell you (and us, if you want to share it)which year the barrels were proved.

Condor, The proof marks on your gun are Birmingham nitro proof, 1954-1994.Because your gun is London made and the barrels lack a reproof mark it could be that the barrels are replacements possibly using the original top rib. Most replacement barrels are usually engraved,"replacement barrels by xxxx!"

Roy, I don't think they could be any later than 1989. It's my understanding that there was an "overlap" period, from 1985-89, when the proofmarks could be either metric or the old tons mark. But after 89, only metric.
The Birmingham proofmark under the .729, assuming it's legible, should provide a code that will give an exact date (year) of proof.
