This is a W&C Scott - the action is fantastic, certainly worth re-barreling and re-stocking.

The cost in total was about 18,000 to the client, including new barrels, new stock, Teague chokes and re-lined case. it has interchangeable barrels - new 32" and original 30".

When I look at one of these old beauties, I consider everything but the bottom line to me is the action, depending on the $ wanted of course.
IMHO it is just a shame that a lot of these old girls are doomed to the "smelter" especially if it happens to be that at least the action can be saved. --- John

Shucks.

At current rates, that's only $27,720

Who'd even consider a used Purdey? With a stock. And barrels.

Boy, idk. Maybe Bilious Bob has something there. That's a ton of cash and one could get a pretty nice original top tier gun for $27,000 +. If it was a family heirloom, maybe? That Scott is a pretty gun, though.

For a person who is interested in the final outcome of a project price is not the deciding thing. Now if you are thinking about selling the gun in the short term it must be. If the owner gets 20 years pleasure and use out of that "new" old gun his money will be well spent . You would spend more than 20 years looking for that gun and never find it. Money you may make more of but time once spent is never recovered. Spend money foolishly not time if you must. That is a great gun and will last several more lifetimes.

You can indeed buy a nice gun for the money.

However, if you want a bespoke gun, starting from scratch is a LOT more expensive than starting with an action like this and ending up with exactly what you want.

This client had very particular stocking requirements (he is very broad and muscular with a thick neck and wide spaced eyes and big chest muscles and biceps). He has never had a gun that fitted.

He also wanted a hammer gun with 32" barrels and screw-in multi chokes.

Even with his budget, nothing on the market met his needs. This was the solution.

It was 100,000 less than a new Purdey I just looked at for a client.

SmallBore;

Beautiful action and from what I can see of the new work the gun will be likewise. Very fine original English scroll that only a few English engravers today can replicate, not to mention that almost no one anywhere can carve such lovely hammer gun action fences as this one, certainly not the Italians- as their modern hammer guns demonstrate (IMHO).

Additionally the action appears to be mostly as new. The finished product will be a rare jewel.

Is it worth the kind of money that is being spent? In my Opinion--Yes.

"certainly not the Italians"

IMHO some of the FAMARS hammer guns are quite beautiful.

With kind regards,
Jani

Most of us mortals cannot afford to pay someone to put the action engraving on the old guns that show up from time to time.

I was taught to look for:

Engraving 1st, barrels 2nd, stock 3rd.

Wood can be restocked /repaired.
Barrels can be sleeved or replaced.
Engraving is a priceless lost art that cannot be replaced.

Buy the action, fix the rest.

My 2 cents.

Joe
