FWIW, I had a BSS full beavertail professionally redone to match the trimmer Sporter beavertail, and the results were perfect. Of course, I gave the stocker another Sporter f/e to use as a model so that he could match it exactly. If you just send your f/e and barrels off to the stocker with no model and no specific pics for reference, you run the risk of getting back an expensive surprise.

I agree with JR that a sbtfe can be tastefully done by the right hands (and on the right gun). Here are a couple of examples: Dennis Smith is working up something similar for me on a heavy-proof Brit boxlock with a Woodward style grip.

I like Doverham's examples, especially the one in the bottom picture. Really nice. JR

FWIW, I have done several forend reductions projects. Craig Libhart is correct in his observations...as a good stockmaker that he is should be...there is a possiblility of a reworked forend NOT fitting properly on the barrel. Of the all projects that I have been asked to do for clients...only 5 were well fitted after stocking. Doverham, yours is still coming along well.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Maybe I'll just try to find a halfway decent piece of walnut and try my hand at making my own. I have inlet a lock on a muzzleloading rifle I built a few years ago, so I know I can do some inletting work. It seems like reshaping the existing wood might not come out the best, but I think with some patience and the right tools I could inlet and shape a new one myself.

Thanks. I know it wont be a quick project but I'm always up for a challenge. And if it doesn't work out, I can always put the original wood back on or send it out to one of the wood guys you all suggested.
